Creative Process: ʻUlu Plant – Scholastic Art Awards Cover
For this cover, I chose the ʻulu plant as a symbol of growth, resilience, and cultural roots values that align beautifully with the spirit of young artists. I began with hand-drawn sketches to capture the organic curves and layered leaves of the plant, inspired by traditional botanical illustrations and native Hawaiian forms. I then refined the piece digitally, using rich greens and textured shading to bring depth and warmth to the composition. The final illustration is meant to honor both artistic development and the deep-rooted creativity that connects us to place and heritage.
